An adoption question was sent to an advice columnist. The usual happened, the adoption community weighed in. The background: Adoptive mom found out her daughter (age 17) has been talking to her mother by birth online, and now, her daughter wants to meet her mother by birth and asked her mom to go with her. Adoptive mother writes to the advice columnist for advice because *she* did a closed adoption and now this *woman* has appeared in her daughter’s life because her daughter searched for her other mother. This is not what she wants.

Would Both/And Allow for Honest Conversations in Adoption?
Both/And allows a person to be free to acknowledge and hold more than one truth even though it seems counterintuitive or contrary. In adoption I think it is a badly needed mindset to allow for more honesty and respect – both between the three groups and within each group.

It’s That Day Again…
We didn’t do Mother’s Day per se, at least not like it’s done today. We’d say Happy Mother’s Day at the breakfast table while eating the breakfast mom cooked. All Sunday breakfasts were special, we weren’t having oatmeal (or ‘mush’) and fruit for starters, like we had weekday mornings, and it was better than Saturday when we’d get non-sweetened cold cereal (that we saw as a weekly treat) and fruit. Sunday’s, we’d have either pancakes or waffles (sometimes with hot blueberry sauce for syrup), or eggs and toast and fruit, sometimes even hot fruit on toast (you probably have no idea what that is, or how yummy that was).
