Adoption wish for 2016

My wish for 2016 is that this would be the year adoption sayings that are created to be shared, simply disappear.  You can’t go anywhere online and not see some foolish one-sided simplistic sentiment highlighted on a colored background, or even just stated as a fact that everyone must agree with.  It’s time for adoption service providers (and others) to stop creating and promoting these sayings.    Read the rest of this entry »

Talking about adoptees…

Recently, an adoptive parent was incredibly rude and dismissive about adoptees online, repeating the old trope that happy adoptees were too busy living their lives to be online in adoption groups, and the adoptees online had an agenda.  I took the exception to what she was saying about adoptees, but then had to remove myself because it stressed me out too much.  I don’t do stress.

Triggers…

I love genealogy.  Most know, I spend as much time as I’m able to, working on any one of my four family trees.  I’m also the keeper of family papers and letters.  Today, I want to talk about a sentence in one of those family letters.  Looking back, I’ve had that letter for about a decade, I probably read that particular letter a year or so later, since then, I’ve let it sit for a while inside of me… Read the rest of this entry »

Thoughts…

Why can’t an adoptee just be…

Why must they either love or hate being adopted…

Why must there always be that question…waiting to be asked…

Do non-adopted get asked inane questions like that…

Questions that are unanswerable when you stop and think about what you are asking…

Five things all adoptees want you to know…

1. Probably every adoptee will have issues with the title.  Whether they bristle, roll-their-eyes, sigh deeply, throw their coffee mug at the screen – it’s highly doubtful any adoptee would use this specific title because you can’t say ‘all adoptees’ want you to know, it doesn’t work that way.  Yet, I think there are a few common truths however you feel about being adopted.
