Dear Adoption Professionals…

27 Sep

I know how conscientious you are about promoting Positive Adoption Language, or PAL.  You speak in different venues about the need to use the correct language, so others will too.  The need to educate others about it.  It appears to be working because both prospective and adoptive parents write posts about PAL, correct others by replying to them using the correct terms you provided to them.

Another mantra in adoption today is this statement: When you know better, you do better.

You know that an expectant mother is not a birth mother (or birthmother) until she has signed away her parental rights after giving birth.  I expect you to do better in this area now you know better.  You can do this by ensuring your clients understand the difference and follow your lead by your use of the correct terminology.

I look forward to seeing your newly updated websites and posts showing your commitment to proper adoption language by using the correct terminology; expectant mother (considering adoption) and birth mother (has signed away her parental rights).

Signed,

An Adoptee

“They accept what is black as white and what is white as black- cognitive dissonance isn’t a problem, it’s a solution. It’s facilitated by “newspeak”, which is a new vocabulary that cuts words from language. The goal of newspeak is to make unorthodox communication and thought impossible.”

    So does positive adoption language

yes language is powerful. It builds up and tears down. It’s very persuasive and unreasonable. It can uncalculating and manipulative. It also can be ‘passive aggressive’ and depending on the ill intent of the user its just twists thing their way TO get things their way!!! I wrote this because this comes from a place where I am fed up with some scientists/psychologists/’professionals’ who speak on adoption with ‘authority’ and don’t have a clue!

Absolutely, why I’m pushing back and hopefully it makes someone tell their agency, or an agency reads it and can’t ignore it…
