I missed something…

21 Aug
Reading a blog about a family adopting from Ethiopia and meeting their daughter and “their” daughters “birth parents” and now waiting to go pick her up.
And on the side of their blog they have listed the 10 top reasons to adopt from Ethiopia with number 1 reason – 4.3 Million ORPHANS.
I must have missed something – something big enough to completely change the definition of such a specific term – when did the world decided that you could be an ORPHAN and STILL HAVE TWO LIVING PARENTS?  Has anyone told WEBSTERS DICTIONARY?
Either that or they are fine with NOT adopting an orphan but still think the number 1 reason anyone else should adopt from Ethiopia is to adopt one of the 4.3 Million Orphans.
I’m confused…sigh…

You’re not the only one who doesn’t get it. The hypocrisy just kills me sometimes.

Do you remember that comedian, Bill Ingval (sp), who had the saying “Here’s your sign?” I think we should come up with a sign for people who don’t get it about adoption.

How does someone adopt a child, meet that child’s parents, and feel good about that? Would not a person feel much better helping that family improve their circumstances in some way, by help improving the country, or something? My MIL went there and spent two weeks helping teach women to sew. I know HIV is rampant there, and there are a lot of orphans, but even if the parents had HIV, how do you take their child while they are still living? I just don’t understand.

Christine – welcome! I regularly read your blog…

S – I don’t understand it either but I guess when you want something bad enough…and a sign would be a good thing. But thinking about it – look how many of us were adopted because society deemed being unwed akin to mentally unstable therefore we were placed. The hypocrisy of that still makes my blood boil – society knew damned well that many many unmarried couples were having sex – yet those women who were “caught” were unstable and then man got a free pass – or perhaps they were those “common” immaculate conceptions…men would never do anything like having sex outside of marriage….and SOCIETY let it continue for 30+ years…
