Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution

30 Mar

I loved the first two episodes…and I expected to see others totally thrilled that someone was willing to stand up and say that what is being fed to kids is wrong and great discussions on the many parenting forums.

But no…people are more concerned with “terms” he used like calling the cooks “girls” or “lunch ladies” than the true message he is shouting from the roof tops.  Really?  Seriously?  You would rather bury your child because he or she had such crappy nutrition that they died before their time, or watch them giving themselves insulin shots for life, or early heart attacks, strokes, blindness, amputations – the list is literally endless…

Comments like…”it costs too much to buy healthy food”  or “given a choice kids will choose chicken fingers over veggies” or “it’s too hard to make them eat healthy food”…do a search on the different forums and you will see so many people taking this stance against nutrition that can make the difference between a healthy productive happy life and an incredibly short life filled with many ailments.  Seems like a pretty simple choice for parents to make.  But no, they prefer to bash someone else for their language, talk about the ostrich burying his head in the sand.

How can people be so blind?  How can they continue to feed their children crap and at the same time say they love their children and would do anything for their children?  Can’t they see the hypocrisy of what is coming out of their mouths?

It’s really easy to feed your children simple nutritional foods.  Don’t have junk food in the house and get busy and cook your meals from scratch.  Perhaps the starting place is stop spending countless hours on the computer chit chatting with your friends about how horrible other parents are…

If you do not have junk food in the house the kids will eat the good food.  Some may not eat much to begin with but they will.  Even just eliminating one junk food category at a time can be a great first step.  Get rid of pop and provide water.  Get rid of chips and provide veggies (skip the prepared dip and make something with low-fat yogurt – its cheaper).  Get rid of the sweets and give them fruit.  Get rid of the ice cream and make them fresh fruit juice popsicles.  Get rid of the microwave popcorn and air pop the popcorn.

Taste buds change with food changes.  It takes commitment but you can do it if you want to.  The question really should be do you want your children to out live you or do you want to chance having to bury them before their time?
